Happy and wise - and not dreading Monday

Smiling-on-monday

Be happy. It's one way of being wise.

~ Sidonie Gabrielle Colette

I know it's not Monday today, but Monday tends to be the day people dislike the most. Why? Because loads of people hate their jobs, which is pretty sad.

Here in Japan, a lot of people don't like the theme tune to the wonderful cartoon TV series Sazae-san because it's been broadcast on Sunday night for donkey's years, so hearing the tune reminds people it's back to work the next day.

I really enjoy what I do - writing, teaching and designing - so I also enjoy watching Sazae-san.

But it took me a long time to realize that I love doing these things.

Yeah, I wanted to be an astronaut or a soldier. I studied law and thought I'd become a barrister. I even harboured pretensions of being an architect for a minute or two.

But ever since I was a kid, I've loved writing, drawing and making things. It turns out that, over the years, I've become not too bad at it. In fact, good enough that people will pay me to do it for them.

This makes me incredibly happy. I also like to think I've learned a thing or two.

The phrase 'do what makes you happy' has been repeated so often that it's become trite, which is a real shame. If we all got a chance to do work that made us happy, far fewer of us would dread Monday morning.

And more people could enjoy Sazae-san.
