Profile:
Chuck Mack is an American designer who is half-Icelandic and lives and
works in Reykjavik, Iceland. He often travels to the US where his
designs are produced.
Motivation:
Destiny. I am compelled to design and build things.
Method:
Old
School, an expert carpenter and mechanic who fabricates his own models
and prototypes to full scale before networking with technicians for
production. Computer generated designs tend to look generic and have
no soul. I start with sketches and shape the parts by hand, reworking
until I like how things work and look. The finished prototype needs to
have a nice personality for me to be happy with the result.
Experience:
Hundreds of custom site-specific projects from repairs to complex construction and installations. Handmade pieces by Chuck Mack are sought after even by other designers, and are considered highly collectible.
In Production:
The Giraffi chair (2004) is his first production design and is sold internationally.
Table 29 received the 2008 Red Dot Award for design innovation.
Philosophy:
Don‘t just do it, do it well.
