Review: Fuji Classic 2010

The Fuji Track has been renamed and remodelled for 2010 as the Fuji Classic, but it seems that beyond cosmetics not a great deal else has changed. But why should it? The Fuji Track has established a solid reputation as a capable performer both in the velodrome and on the street, and the Fuji Classic looks to carry on that tradition.

I recently bought one and have to say that I already love it. As it is a track bike at heart, it has a short wheelbase and track angles, meaning that the handling is crisp and instant, and so is the ride: input from me gets an immediate response from the bike. The frame also boasts a high track bottom bracket, which allows me to lean further into corners than I would on my other bikes; particularly welcome when riding fixed gear as I am. It is also incredibly smooth to ride and almost silent, so I find it effortless to reach pretty high speeds. Although my bike is fitted with brakes, the fixed gearing is so responsive that slowing down in all but emergency situations is easy with a bit of practice and forethought. That being said, it's nice to have them there as insurance when descending steep hills. Going uphill has proven to be a lot less daunting than expected as the bike feels so light and responsive, although I'm yet to tackle anything particularly long or steep.

All in all, the Fuji Classic is a fantastic bike for the money. It's hard to believe that it's on the lower end of the scale given how good it feels to ride. The company has a reputation for making good quality track bikes and it's easy to understand why; this is not a manufacturer that has produced a 'fixie' in response to the global trend.
