The Chinese art scene is thriving, and it largely thanks to the likes of Ai Weiwei, a founding member of the Stars group of the 1970's. When asked to do a project at documenta 12, Ai "didn't want to do a conventional work like painting or sculpture, but rather do a work which relates directly to the real lives of ordinary people." To this end, he recruited 1,001 people via his personal blog, from farmers to rock singers, to travel with him to Germany for the resulting 'Fairytale'. You can read an interview with Ai in the current Artkrush. (Links via Artkrush)
